When you lift an object, whether it is a flowerpot or a 200-pound barbell, muscular tension protects your joints, and the greater the muscular tension the greater your strength and the greater the protection.
As your muscles contract under load they produce tension, which helps to stabilize and support your joints. Nowhere is this more important than in regard to the musculature that supports your spine.
Imagine a shovel and the handle of that shovel is your spine. A solid oak handle will allow you to lift a load of gravel with the spade. Now imagine that the handle is made of rubber. As you lift the gravel, the handle begins to bend under the load and eventually dumps the gravel. An unsupported spine essentially works the same way. read full article
